How walking can improve your health and wellness: mind, body, and spirit

Can walking really make that much difference in your health and wellness? The answer is 100% YES! It is easy to get stuck in this mindset that the only way to make real changes is by working out at the gym for an hour 5 times a week. And then we think, well I can’t do that, so I am not going to do anything- because it won’t make a difference. I am here to tell you how walking can improve your healthy and wellness: mind, body, and spirit!

Mind:

Walking has many benefits to your mental health and wellness. As soon as you start walking your body starts releasing endorphins, which makes us feel good! Here are the blank ways that walking is good for your mental health:

  • Change of environment
    • when you walk outside you observe trees, flowers, the sky, other people walking or riding bikes, birds, and lots of other things that are happening.
  • Gives you a break
    • walking allows you to put actual distance between you and whatever is bothering you- work, co-workers, your kids, any other frustrations!
  • Releases endorphins
    • Endorphins are hormones that are made in your pituitary gland and hypothalamus and are our “feel good” chemical.
    • Walking and exercise is a way that endorphins are released!
  • Helps us problem solve
    • walking literally increases blood flow to our brains!
    • increases our creativity.
    • solutions to problems can flow easier while walking.

Body:

It might seem pretty obvious that walking helps or physical health, but here are some specific ways on how walking helps our body!

  • Walking lowers your blood pressure
    • Aim to walk briskly for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week for this benefit
  • Helps maintain a healthy body weight
  • May help prevent many chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer
  • Improves your balance and coordination
  • Increases your energy level

Spirit:

Walking can help connect us to nature and quiet our mind. These can naturally lead us to connecting us with our spirituality. Spirituality is simply our connection to something larger than ourselves. Here is how walking helps with it:

  • Reflection
    • while you are walking, take time to ask yourself some deeper questions.
      • What is my purpose?
      • Am I fufilling it currently?
      • What do I want?
      • How can I start moving toward it?
  • Connect with nature
    • try a mindful walk
  • Take time for gratitude during your walk
  • Try walking at sunrise or sunset

Walking is a great way to improve your health and wellness, and it affects every aspect- mind, body, and spirit. I would love to hear ways that walking has helped you!
