Creating Your Summer Wellness Routine: A Holistic Approach

With each changing season, let nature be our guide to routines ebbing and flowing naturally. When we take a cue from nature, we can feel more connected with what is happening around us.  Certainly we can all relate to trying to continue to force something that isn’t working anymore. It may be that the season has changed and so looking at things from a new perspective is all we need! Summer brings warmth, light, and vibrant energy, making it the perfect time to rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit. As a holistic nurse and wellness coach, I believe in nurturing the whole person—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Let’s look at how to  create a summer wellness routine that embraces this holistic philosophy. Please feel free to adopt any of these that feel right for you and the season you are in.

1. Embrace the Outdoors

Benefits:

  • Vitamin D: Sunshine is a natural source of Vitamin D, essential for bone health and immune function.
  • Mood Booster: Sunlight increases serotonin levels, improving mood and reducing stress.

Tips:

  • Morning Walks: Start your day with a brisk walk in nature. It’s a great way to energize your body and clear your mind.
  • Outdoor Activities: Engage in activities like hiking, cycling, or gardening. They not only keep you fit but also help you connect with nature.

2. Hydrate Wisely

Benefits:

  • Detoxification: Proper hydration helps flush out toxins from your body.
  • Skin Health: Keeps your skin hydrated and glowing.

Tips:

  • Infused Water: Add slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries to your water for a refreshing twist.
  • Hydrating Foods: Consume water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.

3. Seasonal Nutrition

Benefits:

  • Nutrient Density: Seasonal produce is fresher and more nutritious.
  • Digestive Health: Eating seasonal foods aligns with your body’s natural digestive cycle.

Tips:

  • Farmers Markets: Visit local farmers markets for fresh, seasonal produce. We have some wonderful options in Lincoln for this!
  • Colorful Plates: Incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables into your meals to ensure a wide range of nutrients.

4. Mindful Movement

Benefits:

  • Physical Health: Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility.
  • Mental Clarity: Physical activity releases endorphins, which help reduce stress and anxiety.

Tips:

  • Yoga outside: This combines physical movement with mindfulness and nature, promoting overall well-being.
  • Bike to work: With the warmer weather, biking to work can be a great way to add movement into your day.

5. Mindful Eating

Benefits:

  • Improved Digestion: Eating mindfully helps in better digestion and nutrient absorption.
  • Weight Management: Being conscious of what and how you eat can prevent overeating.

Tips:

  • Eat Slowly: Take your time to savor each bite. This helps in better digestion and appreciation of food.
  • Gratitude: Practice gratitude before meals. Acknowledge the effort that went into bringing the food to your plate.

6. Rest and Relaxation

Benefits:

  • Stress Reduction: Adequate rest reduces stress and improves overall health.
  • Enhanced Creativity: Relaxation and downtime can lead to increased creativity and problem-solving abilities.

Tips:

  • Afternoon naps: Embrace the summer tradition of taking a short afternoon nap to recharge.
  • Evening Routine: Develop a calming evening routine with activities like reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath.

7. Connect with Others

Benefits:

  • Emotional Support: Strong social connections enhance emotional well-being.
  • Longevity: Social interactions have been linked to longer, healthier lives.

Tips:

  • Social Gatherings: Plan picnics, barbecues, or casual get-togethers with family and friends.
  • Volunteer: Engage in community activities or volunteer work. It’s a great way to meet new people and give back.

8. Spiritual Nourishment

Benefits:

  • Inner Peace: Spiritual practices promote inner peace and clarity.
  • Resilience: Helps build emotional resilience and a sense of purpose.

Tips:

  • Meditation and Prayer: Dedicate time each day for meditation or prayer to cultivate inner peace.
  • Nature Connection: Spend quiet time in nature, reflecting and connecting with your spiritual self.

Conclusion

Creating a summer wellness routine is about embracing the season’s energy and nurturing yourself holistically. By incorporating some of these practices, you’ll not only enhance your physical health but also promote mental clarity and spiritual growth. Remember, wellness is a journey, and every small step you take brings you closer to a balanced, vibrant life.

Wishing you a joyful, healthy, and holistic summer!
