How to set monthly goals and achieve them

As I tried to figure out how to set monthly goals and achieve them, I discovered some things about myself. Coming up with goals is easy for me, and I have the best intentions of making them happen. What has been lacking in the past, is my follow through- and it was really frustrating me! I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. After reading The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin (click here to see/purchase), I learned some reasons why this was happening.

Learning that my tendency (or motivation) is an Obliger, helped me learn different ways to set up my goals. According to the book, Obligers “readily meet outer expectations, but struggle to meet inner expectations.” The reason that I had not been meeting my goals was because I did not have any outer expectations.

What is an Outer expectation?

If you are an Obliger (like me) and want to figure out how to set monthly goals and achieve them try using outer expectations. Here are some examples of an outer expectation:

  • Accountability partner
  • A calendar app with reminders
  • Alarm on phone
  • Using social media groups
  • Deadlines
  • To do lists

How to set monthly goals and achieve them:

Writing things out with a pen and paper and physically checking things off is something that works for me- a good old fashioned to do list! After trying several things that didn’t quite work for me, I decided to make my own. Currently this is how I am setting monthly goals and achieving them-

1. Using my monthly goal planner

*** to be able to download my printables- you just need to sign up for my newsletter & then you get access to all of them!

Each month I print it out and then fill everything out. I like to keep this where I can see it.

3. Go over weekly goals with an accountability partner

Then the weekly goals are corresponding to making sure I am focusing on what I set out for with my word of the year.

4. Each morning setting up my daily plan

5. Use the alarm app on my phone as a reminder

I set multiple alarms for myself throughout the day. Each alarm gets named for what I am supposed to be doing. (Meditation, make coffee, get ready for bed, etc). Getting these reminders helps me stay on track.

6. Setting timers

Once I am doing my task, I use my Fit Bit which has a built in timer. Since it buzzes when the times up, it really simple to use! For example, if I am working on a project, I will set my timer. It helps me stay focused and not get sidetracked, knowing I only have a certain amount of time allotted.
