How to Meditate

If you think meditating is all about being quiet and still, that there is a specific way to meditate, or that there is a “right” way to do it, then I am excited you are here! I used to think the same way, I thought meditating was for other people, who had it more together. Let’s talk about what meditation is and isn’t, different ways to meditate, and finally let’s make it practical- a step by step guide on how to meditate!!

What is meditation?

It is:

There are many different definitions of meditation, but this one explains it best, in my opinion.

a variety of practices that focus on mind and body integration and are used to calm the mind and enhance overall well-being.

National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health
  • bringing your mind to the present moment
  • can be for any amount of time- as little as 1 minute, or as long as an hour
  • is about just being with no agenda and no goal

It isn’t:

  • Meditation isn’t
  • sitting perfectly
  • being perfect
  • a religion
  • a quick fix
  • about having no thoughts or an empty mind

Different ways to meditate:

There are many different ways to meditate, here are a few!

  • Guided meditations
    • lots of options, from apps to YouTube
    • Join me for a live meditation each week in my Facebook Group
  • Body scan meditations
  • Meta meditation-also known as Loving-kindness meditation
  • Spiritual- every religious group has some form of meditation from Christianity to Hinduism, to Islam. If you are looking for a deeper Spiritual connection, meditation is a great way to find that.
  • Focused- using your senses
    • counting marbles or beads
    • listening to a gong
    • counting your breath
    • 5-4-3-2-1
    • mindful walk
  • Movement meditation
    • Walking
    • Yoga
    • Tai Chi
    • Gardening

Let’s make it practical:

If something is not practical for our lives, let’s face it- it’s just not going to happen. So, here is the part that is really important! How to make it practical in your life!

  • Step 1: Make what you want to do easy!
    • start small and have a plan
    • I like using an app or guided meditation on YouTube
    • find a 5-minute meditation to start
  • Step 2: do it at the same time every day & tie it to something that you are already doing
    • try right after you wake up or right before you go to bed
  • Step 3: If you notice a lot of thoughts coming up during your meditation remember that is completely normal.
    • Be aware of them and say something like- that is interesting that I am thinking about work while I am meditating… or imagine your thoughts like a cloud (detaching yourself- you are not your thoughts), watch that cloud float on by…
  • Step 4: Be proud of yourself for taking this time for you!
  • Step 5: REPEAT daily!

I would love to hear your thoughts on my post on how to meditate! Do you meditate now? Is it something that you are going to try?
