How to build a Selfcare Tool Box

Our bodies are made to heal themselves and it’s our job to provide it with the tools to do so.  Just like a toolbox helps you have the right tools to fix a leaky sink, or hang up a picture, a selfcare toolbox has tools to help you care for yourself. What goes into a selfcare toolbox are the things that help you feel calmer and bring you joy. This has personally helped me in my own life and my clients’ lives, so I want to show you how to build a selfcare toolbox. Let me know if you find it helpful 🙂

How to build your selfcare toolbox:

Start by taking some time to think about what makes you feel joy or what helps you feel better when you are down. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and start writing! This list is going to look different for everyone. No two look the same, so don’t feel yours needs to be a certain way. It is whatever you need it to be!

Some ideas to get you started-

  • Watching a sunrise or sunset
  • Going for a walk
  • Yoga
  • Using a foam roller
  • A play list
  • Dance party
  • Doing a puzzle
  • Meditation
  • Cup of tea
  • Twinkle lights
  • Flowers
  • Talking to a friend
  • Making a list
  • Essential oils
  • Reading a book
  • Cuddling with your dog
  • Doing a craft
  • Tapping
  • Belly breathing
  • Colorful pens & a notebook
  • Coloring book and colored pencils
  • Painting your nails
  • Putting on lavender lotion
  • Journaling
  • Drinking a glass of water
  • Weighted blanket
  • Getting a massage
  • Taking a break from electronics

Once you have built your selfcare toolbox, what to do with it?

There are 2 parts to this:

  • Put some items from your list in the box. That way you have something tangible to grab when you need it.   Not everything will be able to fit in a box- like a sunrise, although you could put a picture of one in there. Keep a copy of your list in there for reference.
  • The list, keep copies of this on your bathroom mirror or at your desk and in the notes section of your phone!

I suggest using your selfcare toolbox in these 2 ways:

  1. Do some things on your list daily:
    •  When we walk around in a high state of stress all of the time, our central nervous system is always activated. Doing things daily to that calm us down can help us not be so reactive when something stressful happens.
    • Showing ourselves love by providing things that make us feel good on a regular basis, increases our serotonin which is a natural mood booster
  2. Have your toolbox available to use during stressful times
    • If you are like me, when something stressful happens, I often forget to do the things that I know will help. So having a list of things that do help is a great reminder.

Caring for our bodies in a holistic way can bring us real wellness and health. Everything is connected- mind, body and spirit so nourishing all 3 is important.
