3 ways to bring fun into your life

I was listening to a podcast several months ago that talked about fun. In the podcast the question was asked- what do you do for fun? My first thoughts were- organizing a closet, cleaning my house… and I realized that somewhere along the way, I had become un-fun.  The things that I did for “fun”, were someone else’s definition of fun, but not really my own. That’s why I wanted to bring you 3 ways to bring fun into your life. Especially as moms, the to-do tasks seem to take over the spot that fun used to take over. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Whether you are a new mom, or your kids are young adults- it’s never too late to bring fun back into your life!

3 ways to bring fun into your life:

  1. Know why having fun is important

    • Having fun is a healthy part of self-care.
  2. Ask yourself what you think is fun

    • While making a list might sound like the opposite of fun, it can really help you brainstorm if you are stuck. If you have a hard time answering the question- What do you do for fun, or what do you think is fun. Try sitting down and making a list of everything that sounds fun. If you are like me, then this may take some time. You might not be able to think of things right off the bat. But keep your list going! It may take a couple weeks to figure it out.
    • For it to qualify as fun, it should be an activity that you are doing for the pure enjoyment of the activity, without regard to the outcome. So organizing closets is out!!
    • Some tips…
      • Think about what you did as a kid for fun
      • Try things out and if they are fun, put it on your list and if they aren’t you don’t have to do them again!
      • Enlist a friend or your spouse to experiment
    • Ideas of fun…
      • dancing
      • drawing
      • reading
      • surfing
      • roller blading
      • take a cooking/art/dance class
      • color in a coloring book
      • a bike ride without a destination
      • sand volleyball
      • do a cartwheel
      • write a poem
      • do a puzzle
      • make your room into a sanctuary
      • set up an area in your house to do arts and crafts
      • make a fun playlist
      • find a show that makes you laugh
      • dance in the rain
      • walk in nature
      • stand up paddleboard
  3.  It’s okay to say no

    • If you try something that sounds fun, and don’t like it- stop doing it!
    • It’s okay to stop doing something that you are no longer getting enjoyment from.
  4. Block out time in your week for fun

    • As adults if we don’t plan it, it doesn’t happen. Making fun a priority and scheduling it, is how to make it happen. It should get as much of a priority as any obligations that you have to others.
    • Start with blocking out 1 hour a week
