The mind-body connection is important for your health

Why does being connected to your mind, body and spirit matter?

There is not a single thing that happens to you or me that only affects the mind, or only affects the body, or only affects the spirit or soul. Each experience we have is woven in to all 3. If we ignore any part of that mind-body-spirit connection the result is dysregulation and misalignment. And whatever we are working on will be harder, and usually not sustained.

Here is an example…

Think about someone who wants to lose weight.

The single system approach could look something like.. restricting calories, exercising, and maybe taking diet pills. This is focusing on the body and what it looks like. It does not take into account the mind or spirit. You may get a result that includes weight loss, but that person most likely does not feel good, they are being motivated by fear, and most likely the weight loss will not last.

Enter a mind-body-spirit connection.

This whole body, holistic approach could look something like this…

  • Begin each day with 5 minutes of journaling and 5 minutes of meditation. Set an intention for your day and inspired actions to stay in that intention.
  • Find some nutrient dense meals and snacks that you like focusing on 50% of your plate being colorful plants, 25% healthy fats and 25% protein.
  • Embrace the 80/20 lifestyle and enjoy your life.
  • Before each meal or snack, take a pause with 3 breaths repeating “I am breathing in, I am breathing out” and ask yourself- what is my body needing? What is the healthiest choice I can make here to care for myself?
  • Create an exercise routine and way to move your body that you like.

This approach engages the mind-body-spirit and is the way to create lasting changes. It isn’t coming from a place of lack or fear. It is coming from a place of love and care for yourself.
