Why you Need an Energy Reset

In our fast-paced, always-connected world, it’s easy to feel drained and overwhelmed by the demands of daily life. Stress, work, and personal responsibilities can leave us feeling depleted both physically and mentally. That’s where the concept of an “energy reset” comes into play. An energy reset is a deliberate practice that allows you to recharge, rejuvenate, and regain your vitality. Let’s explore why to have an energy reset and then practical tips on how to do it.

Why an Energy Reset Is Important.

Knowing the why helps us understand the importance to is and can lead to a greater follow through. Nobody likes a “because I said so” approach, So let’s dive into why this is important first.

  1. Mental Clarity and Focus

Taking time for an energy reset helps clear your mind of clutter and distractions. It allows you to refocus your thoughts and concentrate on what truly matters, leading to enhanced productivity and creativity. Just like a cluttered house makes you feel claustrophobic, a cluttered mind does the same thing. It’s hard to be focused when there are so many thoughts going on.

  1. Stress Reduction

Stress is a significant energy drainer. By taking an energy reset you provide yourself a break from the daily stressors and this helps you manage and reduce stress levels. Lowering stress improves your overall well-being and promotes a healthier life in all kinds of ways. It lowers stress hormones like cortisol, improves mental health, and gives us more enjoyment in life.

  1. Improved Physical Health

Your physical health is closely linked to your energy levels. Resting and resetting your energy can lead to improved sleep quality, better immune function, and more energy for physical activities, which in turn can contribute to overall health.

  1. Enhanced Emotional Well-being

When you take time for yourself through an energy reset, you can process your emotions. This can help you cultivate emotional resilience, leading to better mental health and more positive relationships. We will get into the “how” below, but when you take the time to process emotions, there is a release that happens and the ability to move on. It is easy to hold on tightly to how we have been wronged, but it doesn’t help us grow and move forward.

How to Do an Energy Reset

Now that we’ve established the importance of an energy reset (the why), let’s explore how to actually do it. What’s great about an Energy Reset is, you can do it anytime. You can schedule a day to focus on resetting your energy, but it can also be part of your daily routine. Here are some practical steps to get you started:

1) Prioritize yourself :

This can be challenging, especially if you have lived for years putting everyone else’s needs before your own. If you make a commitment to yourself, give it the same priority as if you made one to someone else. Start small, this can be a big shift – small consistent changes are the best way to build lasting habits and routine.

Try doing this: Get up 10 minutes earlier and read a book(or do something you feel like you never have time for) while drinking your coffee before the day starts (no phones, email or tv).

2)Set Boundaries:

If there are relationships in your life that you feel resentment and overall frustration towards, these are keys that there are boundaries that are not established. Boundaries are not walls to keep people out, but bridges to stay connected in healthy ways. Nedra Glover Tawwab defines boundaries as “rules, expectations, needs and desires that help you feel safe and comfortable in your life and relationships.”

Try this: If you are an automatic “yes” to most things you are asked to do, and then feel overwhelmed and resentful, pause before saying yes next time. Say- “I need to check our schedules and get back to you.” Then, really check your schedule, including kid’s schedules, and all other commitments you have.  Think about the time and energy commitment of saying yes to whatever was asked of you.  Know that when you say yes to something, that means you are saying no to something else. Sometimes that is sleep, energy, your planned workout, downtime, etc. Saying no can feel wrong. For people who automatic say “yes” it can even feel mean or bring up guilt. Those feelings do not mean that you are doing anything wrong,  it just means you are starting a new habit of saying yes to yourself.

3) Mindful practices:

This simply means being in the present moment. When we are stressed it’s usually because we are thinking about something that happened in the past or worrying about something in the future.

Try this grounding exercise: Take 3 deep breaths. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can smell, 2 things you can feel, 1 thing you can taste.

4) Have intentional time each day to be phone free-

Being always connected and available can be very draining. The constant notifications and just feeling like you have to be “on” all the time is exhausting. Create intentional times every day that you turn your phone off, turn notifications off, use apps to help structure. I have been using an app called Clearspace that has been extremely helpful with this.

Try this: Have a docking/charging station for your phone at home, put it there when you get home from work and create designated no phone spaces in your home (like dining tables or bedrooms).

5) Intentional movement

moving our bodies releases endorphins which can boost mood and energy levels. Incorporating movement that you enjoy is an important part of creating energy. The important part is to find something you enjoy. You don’t have to do a certain number of reps or certain exercises in order to feel the benefit. If you are enjoying what you are doing, you will feel even better. There are a lot of options

Try one of these: Get together with a friend and go on a walk, have a dance party in your kitchen to your favorite song, check out a new class that you have been wanting to try- in person or virtually. I love Heather Robertson’s programs on YouTube.

6) Eat nourishing foods-

The food we eat plays a huge role on our energy. Instead of focusing on what NOT to eat, focus on what to have. Add nutrient rich foods like colorful plants, lean proteins, and healthy fats. By approaching our nutrition on what to ADD instead, feels more energetic and gives the added nutrients help GIVE you energy. When you add colorful plants into your diet you get: more nutrients and less calories, natural carbohydrates (our body’s primary source of energy), antioxidants which help protect our cells & maintain energy, and fiber that allows us to have sustained energy

Try this: Add more plants by creating a healthy plate filling 1/2 with veggies, 1/4 with carb (like a fruit) & 1/4 protein.

7) Get Quality Sleep:

During sleep every system in our body is affected. If you are not sleeping well, over time this affects our health. So, prioritize a good night’s sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep to ensure your body and mind have the time to reset and restore. Having a bedtime/nighttime routine is a must!

Try this: Create a bedtime routine. An hour before bed, start winding down. This means turn off screens, dim the lights, try some activities like: reading a book, take a hot bath, play a relaxing playlist, & put on comfy pjs. Experiment with some different options and see what helps you best.

8) Explore Hobbies and Interests:

Hobbies and interests can be a great source of joy. There are so many options, find something that brings you look forward to. Even if you think you are too busy, these activities are a way that help us feel replenished.

Give one of these a try: scrapbooking, knitting, gardening, cooking, reading, decorating, doing a jigsaw puzzles, photography, games, dancing or astronomy. With YouTube there is an endless supply of how to videos, instead of turning to scrolling at the end of the day shift that time to something that you are creating.

An energy reset is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for maintaining a balanced and healthy life. By taking the time to reset your energy, you can improve your mental clarity, reduce stress, boost physical and emotional well-being, and ultimately enhance your overall quality of life. Remember, an energy reset doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; small, consistent efforts can make a big difference. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
