Boundaries are ways to set up clear expectations and responsibilities, they help us define what is appropriate in relationships. I would like to share with you how to create boundaries and live authentically.
How to Create Boundaries and Live Authentically:
Here are 3 common boundaries
- Physical
- Emotional
- Time
Let’s put these into action and dive a little deeper into each one to clarify what exactly they mean…
1.Physical:
This is anything that involves your physical body
- physical needs
- touch
- personal space
Examples:
- “Don’t take things off of my desk without my permission.”
- “I feel comfortable shaking your hand instead of giving you a hug.”
- “I need to step away from my desk to eat my lunch.”
2.Emotional:
Being able to express and nurturing your feelings and emotions
- what you share with others
- expressing your feelings
- speaking up if you do not want to talk about something
- alone time
- sense of self
- energy level
Examples:
- Limiting your availability to someone who wants to just complain
- “I need you to share bath time responsibilities with our kids so we both can enjoy free time.”
- “I am not able to attend your party, thank you for thinking of me!”
- “I do not want to talk about my weight/love life/etc.”
3.Time:
Boundaries with time are about understanding your priorities and not overcommitting.
Examples:
- “We will only be able to stay for an hour.”
- “I am unable to volunteer for that event.”
- “I will only respond to work emails during the hours of 8-5 pm.”
