Do you ever feel like if you only had discipline then you would be able to get everything done that you wanted? Have you ever said or thought – “If I had discipline then I would exercise, eat healthy and not watch so much TV?”
The good news is that discipline is something everyone can have! It is not something that you are born with. It is something we can develop and grow within us! And the key is to set up your life so that you don’t have to use discipline all of the time. Make what you want to do easy. Let’s go through how to create discipline in your life and then let’s talk about how to set up your life so that you don’t have to constantly rely on discipline!
To be more disciplined: start here:
- Set clear goals & then write them down.
- think about both short term and long term goals
- what do you want to achieve in the next month, year, 5 years?
- Assess why these things are important to you. When you know the why behind the want it can help make it more important.
- Break down your goals into smaller steps and then put it on the calendar
- Example goal: I want to start exercising
- Name the habits needed to make this goal happen
- Work out 3 times a week, make it specific:
- I will do a 30-min Heather Robertson workout at 7am M, W, F
- Put your workouts in the calendar, schedule them like you would a meeting or any other important commitment
- Set an alarm in your phone to remind yourself
- Watch what you say to yourself. Our mindset and our thoughts control our actions
- If you say to yourself “I don’t have time to work out” then you won’t. Try changing your thoughts to “I have time for what I prioritize, and I am prioritizing working out”.
- Evaluate weekly on how the habits that will create your goal are working. Adjust as needed.
- Visualize success. What will it look like and feel like when you are achieving your goals? Regularly do this activity. Visualizing is a powerful part of achieving your goals.
Setting up your life to make what you want to do easy:
- Take a look at your environment. Is it set up to make what you want to happen easy?
- Using our previous example of working out, do you have your workouts scheduled or are you leaving them up to chance? Are the things you need ready to go, or do you have to search for them (clothes, shoes, yoga mat, etc)?
- What distractions are keeping you preoccupied?
- set up boundaries to protect the time that you set to workout
- Create a support system
- enlist a buddy to workout with you, carpool or take turns with another person to get kids to school or activities
- tell the people in your life about your plans and ask for help with accountability
