Last March in the middle of training for a 1/2 marathon, after a longer run, I thought that I tweaked my hip. I didn’t let it slow me down! I was running faster than I ever had been able to and doing Crossfit at least 5 days a week. So I kept training and after a completely miserable 10 mile run I started questioning if I would be able to do the 1/2. I tried doing some Physical Therapy & got an X-ray. I did my exercises I was supposed to do, but I really wasn’t interested in resting much. It turned out the 1/2 marathon wasn’t meant to be, but I continued working out. It seemed like a long as modified movements I could get through workouts. But it started getting really painful and I knew something was not right . Finally I went to my provider and she wanted me to see an Orthopedic doctor. After getting an MRI I finally had an answer to my pain. My hamstring had become detached from my pelvic bone. Well shoot!! This unfortunately meant that I had surgery to repair it this past Monday. The recovery is pretty extensive and includes non weight-bearing & on crutches for 6 weeks. I also can’t sit for around 3 weeks. My brain immediately went into plan mode on how I could be the least burden on the wonderful and amazing people in my life.
Cooking is one of those things that I knew I could try and do ahead of time. So I have been working on some major meal prepping and doubling recipes.
Shredded Chicken:
2-3 lbs of Chicken Thighs
3 TBL Olive Oil
2 TBL Red Wine Vinegar
Salt & Pepper to taste
Put everything in a crockpot for 8 hours on low
Once all done shred the chicken and put into freezer bags
This can be used to make into tacos, rice bowls or on salads
Meatloaf:
1 lb hamburger
1 lb sausage
1 egg
garlic powder, salt and pepper
1/4 c almond flour
Mix all ingredients together
Put in a large loaf pan
Cook at 350 for 1 hr 15 minutes
Cover with heavy duty foil & after it has cooled put in freezer
Chili
2 lbs hamburger
chili powder, garlic powder, cumin paprika, salt and pepper
1 can kidney beans
1 can black beans
1 can diced tomatoes
Cook hamburger until done
Add all ingredients to a crockpot
Cook on low 8 hours, let cool and put into freezer bags
Taco Meat
2 lbs hamburger meat
2 TBS chili powder
1 TBL cumin, garlic powder, paprika
1 tsp salt, pepper and oregano
Cook hamburger until done then add seasonings, let simmer
Let it cool and put into freezer bags
Trying to have some fun with it
The night before surgery we decided to have some fun…
So right now I am trying to be a good patient as recovery is extensive and long. Non weight-bearing and crutches for 6 weeks, no sitting for 2-3 weeks. But this too shall pass. I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful people in my life to help do the things I can’t do right now.
Any tips on crutches, great books to read, podcasts to listen to? I would love to hear them!

Hope your recovery goes well and faster than it sometimes feels. 😉. With your good eating and physical condition before, that’s a huge help. And also being positive and embracing what is! You’ll do fabulous in your recovery.
I broke/fractured my kneecap a couple weeks ago and am dealing with a leg brace and crutches … first time ever. I figure God has given this to me and my family for a reason. And it is true, this too shall pass.
You may have read them already but For the Love and Of Mess & Moxie by Jen Hatmaker, in my opinion, we’re good, uplifting, fun reads.

Thank you so much! I am sorry about your kneecap issues, that doesn’t sound like fun 🙁 I have also am looking at this as what lesson comes with this and I know it will bring patience, gratefulness and appreciation. I am sure many more things too. Thank you for the book recommendation, I have not read that yet but think it looks great! It will definitely be on the list 🙂
