Creativity might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of wellness. But it is an often overlooked component to our overall wellness. I want to show you how to become more creative and why it’s important! Do you think of yourself as a creative person? Let me let you in on a little secret – we are all creative!!! You might not believe me but stick with me for a second. Ask yourself the following questions and if you answer yes to any of them, then YOU are a creative person!!
- Have you ever thrown a meal together for your family with not a lot of time or money?
- Have you ever worried about something that hasn’t happened?
- Have you ever had to figure out how multiple kids will get to multiple places at about the same time?
- Have you ever daydreamed about a something that you want to do?
- Have you ever planned a family vacation?
- Have you managed a project at work?
- Have you ever had to plan your day around other people?
- Do you play an instrument?
- Do you knit, sew, or quilt?
- Have you ever helped one of your kids with a school project?
- Have you made a school lunch for someone?
- Have you played a pretend game with one of your kids?
Every single one of these things requires creativity. My guess is that you are proficient at many of these things I listed above, and this is just a very small sample of things that requires you to be creative to accomplish!
Why is creativity important to our wellness?
Creativity is a superpower that we all have. Unfortunately, along the way our creativity gets squashed down and replaced with following all the “rules”. Learning how to use creativity is another way to bring wellness and joy in our life. Even if you don’t feel like you are a creative person, you can learn how to find it again and use it.
Things that creativity helps us with:
- Problem solving
- Being non-judgmental
- Finding joy
- Being better at our jobs
- Learning what our true purpose is
- Having more authentic relationships
How to become more creative:
We do a lot of consuming in today’s world and over-consuming can hide our creativity. When you feel yourself grab for your phone to scroll social media or you start ruminating about something that bothers you, stop and instead create!
- Write down what your perfect day looks like
- Don’t hold back, and don’t write something because you “think” that’s what it should be. Write it out exactly as you imagine it.
- Instead of worrying about the worst-case scenario, let your mind envision the best-case scenario
- It takes a lot of creativity for our brains to come up with some of these scenarios that we imagine. If we can do it for negative things, we can also do it for positive things.
- Declutter a closet or bookshelf
- Having a clear space allows for more creativity
- Schedule time to be away from your phone & allow yourself to be bored. See where your mind goes and run with it!
- We rarely let ourselves be bored – the slightest sign of boredom we immediately fill with something. Resist that urge and see what happens.
- Take a walk in nature
- Nature has a way of bringing up creativity.
- Think of a skill you have always wanted to do and research ways to learn
- With YouTube, you can literally learn how to do anything you want to do!
- Find a video or an app and set aside 10 minutes each day to learn
- Spend some time doodling
- Doodling is good for our brains.
- Allow time for a creative hobby (knitting, woodwork, drawing, painting, wreath making, needlework, plant a garden, photography, play the piano, etc).
- Be curious
- If you feel yourself judging someone, instead try to be curious about what experiences they may have had that have led them to feel or act that way
