How Untamed by Glennon Doyle Changed the Way I See Myself

My introduction to Glennon Doyle started in an unexpected place—during a Sunday sermon. My pastor was talking about vulnerability and shared a quote from her that instantly resonated with me. I went home, found her blog, and started reading. The more I read, the more I wanted to keep going.

There’s something powerful about a person who is unapologetically themselves—fully honest, yet still kind. At that time in my life, I felt unsure of who I was. I had spent so much time trying to please others that I had lost touch with my own voice. Glennon’s words showed me a different way, a way of living that felt both terrifying and freeing.

The first book of hers that I read was Love Warrior, and it was eye-opening in a way I had never experienced before. When my first marriage ended, I picked it up again and read it cover to cover. It hit even deeper the second time. So when I heard she was releasing Untamed, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I’ve now read it twice, and honestly- I think every woman—and man—should read this book.

My Favorite Quotes from Untamed

Glennon has a way of putting words to emotions we all feel but struggle to articulate. Here are some of the lines that stopped me in my tracks:

“Feeling all of your feelings is hard, but that’s what they’re for. Feelings are for feeling. All of them. Even the hard ones. The secret is that you’re doing it right, and that doing it right hurts sometimes.”

“I thought that I was supposed to feel happy. I thought that happy was for feeling and that pain was for fixing and numbing and deflecting and hiding and ignoring.”

“When a woman finally learns that pleasing the world is impossible, she becomes free to learn how to please herself.”

“The truest, most beautiful life never promises to be an easy one. We need to let go of the lie that it’s supposed to be.”

“I burned the memo that defined selflessness as the pinnacle of womanhood, but first, I forgave myself for believing that lie for so long.”

“I burned the memo presenting responsible motherhood as martyrdom.”

“Being human is not hard because you are doing it wrong, it’s hard because you are doing it right.”

“My husband’s infidelity was a jagged gift because it forced me to see that being a good wife wasn’t enough to keep our marriage together. Being a good mother wasn’t enough to keep my kids from pain.”

Why Untamed is So Important

There’s a common theme among women—especially moms. We are taught that being “good” means self-sacrificing. That to be worthy, we must pour ourselves out for others, often at the expense of our own identity.

If you ask a mom, Who are you? or What do you do? her answer will likely be about her kids, her spouse, and maybe her job. Rarely about herself. I know, because I lived that way for a long time. And if I’m honest, I still feel the pull sometimes.

That’s why this book is so important. It gives women permission to reclaim themselves. It reminds us that being whole is not just a gift to ourselves—it’s a gift to the people we love. When we break free from the societal cages we’ve been placed in, we don’t just survive—we thrive. And when we thrive, we show up as our best, most authentic selves for the people in our lives.

This book is a wake-up call. A call to be untamed.
