How to have fun again

Somewhere along the way we forgot how to have fun… Between taking kids to practices and games, cooking dinner, doing laundry, planning out the schedule for the week fun has become null and void in our life. Remember when we couldn’t wait to be adults? I am here to tell you that fun is a real part of our health and wellness and is a keys to finding REAL wellness. So, let’s explore how to have fun again!

I started riding my bike again

How are we going to do this, you ask? Here’s my plan… we are going to define fun and why it is important to our wellness, assess our current level of fun, and then figure out how to start having more of it! So, let’s start…

1.What is fun anyways?

The definition of fun is “enjoyment, amusement or lighthearted pleasure.” I would further say fun cannot include a “desired outcome” besides the enjoyment of the activity. So, if you are like me and wanted to write down- organizing closets, then it doesn’t count as fun!!!

2. Why is fun important to wellness

Having fun impacts us holistically- mind, body and spirit and in turn is an important aspect to our wellness. Let’s look at how this happens…

  • Mind
    • Encourages mindfulness (living in the present moment)
    • Healthy way to relieve stress
    • Can improve memory and focus
  • Body
    • lowers cortisol levels (one of our stress hormones)
    • improves energy
    • encourages movement
  • Spirit
    • connection with others
    • connection with a larger purpose
    • increase feelings of gratitude

3. Next, lets assess our fun

An assessment probably isn’t what comes to mind first when we are thinking about fun, but it is helpful to look at to see how we can improve in that area. So, ask yourself these questions…

  • Do you have fun on a regular basis (remembering the definition from above)?
  • When you have free time, what do you do with it?
    • Many people will say that they do not have free time, but take a look at the screen time feature in your phone, look at the time spent watching Netflix, etc.
    • We often have more free time then we think we do; it is just how we are spending it
  • List any activities that you do now, that are fun to you

Decided to dress up and have fun for Halloween!

4. How to have more fun

Now that we have defined fun, learned why it is important to wellness and assessed where we are currently at, you may be wondering how to start having more of it and what to do!

  • Music is a great place to start, what songs are your jam? Make a “FUN” playlist
  • What did you used to do as a kid? All of these things can still be done!
    • ride a bike
    • dance
    • roller-skate
    • art project
    • puzzles
    • Legos
    • color
    • reading
    • board or card games
  • Be aware of when you tend to grab your phone to mindlessly scroll- have a basket with some of these things from above in it that you can grab instead
  • Start a monthly game night
  • Start a monthly craft night (or see if there is already somewhere locally that is doing this)
  • Take a dance class- there are many options for adults (tap, ballet, latin)
  • Have a dance party in your living room
  • Play frisbee
  • Join a sand volleyball league
  • Go bowling
  • Play mini-golf
  • Do an escape room
  • Join or start a club- book club, supper club, gardening club, wine club, movie club, the possibilities are endless!
  • Going to a concert

I would love to hear what you think about this and what you are going to do to add more fun into your life!!
