How to find your identity & improve your wellness

Knowing who you are, can impact your health and wellness.  They may not seem related at first but let me show you how to find your identity & improve your wellness.

Let’s start with this question: Who are you?

If you are like a lot of people, your answer might include someone or something else…

For example:

  • Someone’s mom
  • Someone’s wife
  • A football player
  • HR person at (fill in the blank) company
  • A fourth-grade teacher
  • A yoga instructor
  • A care giver

If that is the case, here is something to consider- What happens if that stops being true or changes.

Things like:

  • being a high school athlete & graduating
  • retiring from a career
  • changing a career
  • ending of a relationship
  • loss of a spouse (through death or divorce)
  •  kids growing up & moving out
  • death of a parent
  • getting laid off from a job

So, what does this mean?

I just finished reading Atomic Habits by James Clear, if you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it.

In the last section of the book, he discusses this. His recommendation is to “avoid making any single aspect of your identity an overwhelming portion of who you are.. The more you let a single belief define you, the less capable you are of adapting when life challenges you.”

  • A solution to this is finding your identity in who you are as a person, rather than what you do for other people or other organizations.
    • For example: You can examine what you love about the roles that you play in your life & reword them.
      • “I am a Cross-fitter” becomes “I am the type of person who loves a physical challenge.”
      • “I am an accountant” becomes “I am a person who likes organization and attention to detail.”
  • Another solution is not allowing one of your roles to “take over”.
    • For example:
    • Your kids graduate and move out. If your primary focus and purpose is being a mom, this is going to be a very difficult stage in life.
A relationship ends, if your identity is completely tied up into this other person, the transition will be more challenging.

Things to do:

  • Remember that you are important and need to be a priority in your own life- so make the time to be you
  • Schedule time in your life for things that you enjoy
    • write it in your calendar
  • Think about these things:
    • What do I think is fun?
      • If this is hard for you to list, think back to what you did as a kid
    • What do I enjoy?
    • If I have an afternoon to myself, what would I do?
    • What makes me lose track of time?
    • What are my values?
  • Once you do this write out who you are. Use words that are not attached to something or someone else.
    • For example: I am a person who likes to________ I am a person who values_____________ etc.

How knowing your identity is related to wellness:

The way we define ourselves greatly impacts how we feel about ourselves. When you find your identity, you also learn what your values are, what is important to you, where you want to spend your time, what you enjoy and what roles you play in your life and the importance of them. To live a life that you love, knowing who you are, is an important part of that.
