What Self-Love Really Looks Like: A Holistic Approach to Wellness
When you hear the word self-love, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
For many of us, it might be a bubble bath, a motivational quote, or a moment of solitude. While those things can absolutely be part of a self-love practice, the truth is, self-love goes far deeper.
It sets the tone for how we treat our body, mind, and spirit. When we seek growth and transformation from a foundation of love for ourselves—rather than punishment or shame—it feels entirely different. I see this every day in my work as a coach, and I’ve experienced it personally as well.
The Foundation of Wellness and self-love
When we look at self-love holistically, it becomes clear: it is the foundation of true health and wellness.
Self-love can’t be bought from an ad, found through social scrolling, or taken as a quick-fix supplement. And it doesn’t magically appear once we lose weight, achieve a milestone, or earn someone else’s approval. It’s deeper than that.
Anything I’ve tried to achieve in my life has flowed easier once I approached it from a place of love for myself.
Here are five ways that I have made self-love a regular practice in my own life and ways that might also support you on your wellness journey:
1. Pay Attention to What Feels Energizing
I began asking myself a simple question: What feels energizing and what feels draining?
That awareness helped me make decisions that brought more alignment and abundance into my life. Now, I reflect on this every Sunday, looking back at the week to guide how I want to move forward. Regularly doing this helps you to learn what your voice actually sounds like, when you take the time to ask yourself this and make changes, you build self-trust and love.
2. Set Boundaries
One of the most life-changing practices I’ve adopted is protecting my time, energy, and peace.
That doesn’t mean I never do anything unpleasant, life doesn’t work that way—it just means I’m intentional with what I do. I say no to what consistently drains me and yes to what fills me up. And when I must do something that’s draining, I create structure and support around it to safeguard my well-being.
3. Reframe My Inner Dialogue
Our words have incredible power—especially the ones we say to ourselves.
When I started noticing my inner self-talk, it was a wake-up call. I asked myself, Would I say this to my children, to a good friend, or to someone I love? If the answer was no, I got curious about why I thought it was okay to say it to myself.
That awareness helped me shift my inner dialogue from sabotage to support. It didn’t change overnight, but the practice of noticing and reframing has made all the difference.
4. Practice Joy Daily
Joy isn’t something we stumble into—it’s something we create through intentional action.
Some of the simple things that bring me joy: time with my grandchildren, a good book, a quick text to a friend, a jigsaw puzzle, watching something funny, catching up over coffee, and yes—even organizing a cluttered space.
Find your joy and schedule it in. It matters more than you might think.
5. Nourish My Body
We live in a world filled with opinions about what our bodies “should” look like. But I’ve found peace by asking a different question: How do I want my body to feel?
When I focus on how I want to feel—energized, strong, rested—I naturally make decisions that are loving rather than controlling. That means choosing foods that support my energy, movement that feels good and functional, and prioritizing sleep.
Does this resonate with you?
