5 Life-Changing Lessons from Nature I Learned Backpacking in the San Juan Mountains

“In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect.” — Alice Walker

I just returned from a 5-day backpacking trip deep in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado—one of the most breathtaking, remote places I’ve ever explored. Being fully immersed in nature—no cell service, no distractions, opened my heart and mind in ways I didn’t expect, I left there with so many lessons that I am now using in my every day life.

This is my 3rd backpacking trip and each time I learn and grow about myself and this time was no different. I came home with a new sense of clarity. You don’t have to enjoy backpacking or nature to get learn from my experience.

These are the five powerful lessons from nature that I’m taking with me—and I hope they inspire you too.

1. Life Is Too Short to Live in Fear

Seeing nature- especially places that are remote and you can only get to by hiking into them allows us to experience the vastness of the mountains, the expansiveness of the sky, and the clouds being so close I felt like I could touch them in a completely different way. Everything that I was seeing from the tiniest flower to the tallest peaks are things that happen without any person doing anything. Knowing that the waterfalls we saw, the flowers growing, and the wind blowing is happening all of the time, and there is something about this that reminded me just how small we are in the grand scheme of things. And just how much the things that we are afraid of in our day to day life are so small. And it felt freeing. It means we don’t need to stay stuck, play small, or let fear drive our decisions.

One of the most profound lessons from nature is this: fear will always be there, but it doesn’t have to be in control. Your life is too precious and short to be lived from a place of fear.

2. Growth Isn’t Always Comfortable

If you’ve ever carried a heavy backpack up a steep trail, you know: it’s not exactly “comfortable.” When I started feeling physical discomfort during this experience- I began a mantra in my head: I am not hear to be comfortable. And it hit me, that this is true for life as well. Are we here as humans to live as comfortably as possible? Is that our goal? I don’t want it to be mine. Always being comfortable means never learning or growing or really experiencing anything fully.

Nature taught me that discomfort isn’t a problem—it’s a sign you’re expanding. Whether it’s a tough conversation, processing grief, being vulnerable, or failing at something new, growth and discomfort walk hand in hand.

When we listen to the lessons from nature, we embrace the hard stuff and create space for healing, wisdom, and deeper connection.

3. It’s Okay to Take a Reroute

Sometimes the trail isn’t marked clearly. Sometimes it’s steeper or longer than you planned. Sometimes- you find yourself in a lightning storm and have to do something you weren’t planning on doing. Yes, this is exactly something that happened to us on trail. Instead of trying to push through to our plan we stopped, took a breathe, and realized we needed to change direction. If our need for control would have been priority we would have put ourselves in a dangerous situation.

In life, just like on the trail, there’s power in rerouting with intention. It’s not failure. It’s a course correction. Let go of the rigid “shoulds” and trust that when you pause and listen, the way forward becomes clearer.

4. Mindful Choices Create a Meaningful Life

Backpacking forces you to be intentional—every ounce matters. You don’t pack extra “just in case” items. You choose wisely, with care and purpose. Before something goes into your pack, you have to think: is this necessary, what is it’s purpose and does it really mean something to me?

Over the last year + I have been on a downsizing journey in my life through moving from a larger home to a small home. This experience brought me back to the beauty of mindful decision-making. In a world that encourages constant accumulation, nature invites us to simplify. Nature invites us to think about what’s important and what we truly value. Whether it’s what we buy, how we spend our time, or who we give our energy to—less really can be more.

5. Being > Doing

One of the most healing lessons from nature was the invitation to just be. No agenda, to-do list, pressure to produce. In the real world the to-do lists and what we get checked off of them can take center stage.

Stepping away from the noise and into stillness gave my nervous system space to reset. Now that I’m back, I’m creating daily rhythms that reflect that slower, more grounded way of living. Reminding myself that my body needs to rest and be so that I can do from a place of love and intention.

Final Thoughts

Nature doesn’t rush, and yet everything gets done. These lessons from nature continue to guide me as I reintegrate into everyday life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of your path—I invite you to step outside, even just for a moment. Let the wind, the trees, the stars remind you of what really matters.

Have you ever had a transformative experience in nature? What lessons did the trail teach you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or questions—drop them in the comments or reach out directly!
