How to get clutter under control

Are you feeling overwhelmed by clutter? Ready to learn how to get clutter under control? If looking for papers that you need is a frustrating process, if you are tired of piles on your countertops then you are in the right place! Let’s go step by step on how to identify the clutter in your home and then how to get rid of what you don’t need and organize what you do!

How to get clutter under control:

First let’s define what clutter is~

There are 2 types of clutter, and they are equally able to make us feel suffocated.

  1. Outer clutter
  2. Inner clutter

Outer clutter is what you can see:

  • Papers that come into the house (see my post on organizing paperwork)
    • School forms, school work, art projects, report cards
    • Junk Mail
    • Bank statements
    • Bills
    • Schedules
    • Programs
  • Knick knacks
  • Decorations
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Piles on the dining room table
  • Things on the counter

Inner clutter is the stuff that takes up space in your head

  • Schedules that you are trying to keep track of
  • What to cook for dinner
  • When are you going to workout
  • Things that you need to get done
  • All of those thoughts just going around and around
  • Feeling anxious about something going on in your life

Both inner and outer clutter can make us feel overwhelmed!

The key is finding the balance of what needs to be there and learn what to do with the rest.

What do you do with it all?

For Outer clutter-

  • Have a system to deal with paper coming into the house that works for you and your family
  • Schedule time to go through each room of your house to declutter
    • When organizing and decluttering a space put things into 3 piles
      • Keep
      • Donate
      • Trash
    • Really thing about each thing that you are choosing to keep
  • Give everything a home
  • Get into the habit of putting things back where they go

For Inner clutter-

This is where my printables can help! When I started creating them it was because I was lacking a place to be able to put exactly what I needed to keep track of everything. I love a paper planner, but they just didn’t have everything that I needed. So I started making what I needed. By signing up for my newsletter, you get access to my whole library of printables.
